China: Gao Cong Shui Xian
Gao Cong Shui Xian / Old Tree Water Sprite aka Narcissus
Yan Zhu Cliff tea from Fall 2017. Gao Cong refers to trees that were not pruned and allowed to grow into small trees and are about 60-80 years old. Shui Xian is the preferred cultivar for every day drinking by most of the tea makers we met. It isn't as flamboyant in taste as many of its nearby cousins (Rougui, DHP, etc) but it has a pure, focused taste that is easy to enjoy but still very deep.
Sweet, caramel, hints of daffodil, with the striking mouthfeel on the outside of the tongue from the minerals.
