Masafumi Onishi was born in 1980 and is the fourth generation of his family. Trained in Seto and began making pottery in 2004. He creates seasonal collections and rarely repeats the same color theme. I stumbled upon the work of this young vibrant artist during my time in Kyoto while grocery shopping. I saw one of his chawan in the back of a gourmet vegetable and fruit shop in Nishiki market. His firing technique and glazing vary greatly from piece to piece. They are truly modern works of art that encompass the traditions of Tanba yaki as a purely functional ware for every day use.
